Amazing Jewellery from ‘Almost Grown’

Image

I have recently discovered the beautiful little jewellery online shop ‘Almost Grown’ !
(click on the link to view the website)

My love for the Hamsa-Hand symbol is never ending… my collection is complete with anklets, bracelets, earrings and now a necklace too! I really do love this symbol because the detailing can be so intricate and artistic, so when I discovered ‘Almost Grown’ I contacted the owner Emily immediately to make sure I could share with you all her beautiful products. Here are a few photos for you to take a look at…

  • Hamsa Hand Beaded Gemstone Bracelet: £6.00 (available if you click HERE)
  • Hamsa Hand Delicate Bracelet: £5.00(available if you click HERE)
  • Skull & Spike Necklace: £6.00(available if you click HERE)

Emily is a graduated student with a degree in Graphic Design & Almost Grown was set up as a personal side project to compliment her portfolio. She says that “it was something a little bit different and a bit more practical than my usual work – and of course I love accessories and costume jewellery!” There is no doubt that Emily has fantastic taste in jewellery and the products available are a perfect combination. Though still in its early stages, I think Almost Grown deserves to be recognised! The layout of the online shop (as you can see if you click on the links) is easy to follow and simple; letting the jewellery do the talking!

The Hamsa-Hand necklace was very kindly gifted to me, so therefore I have been able to share with you just how beautiful this piece of jewellery looks when complete with an outfit! When the necklace arrived in the post it immediately caught my attention how beautifully Emily had packaged the product. The cute green stripes and the lovely little note really made my day. It prices at only £6.00 so I advise that you purchase it right HERE.

I hope you purchase from Almost Grown in the future as the quality of the product I received was fantastic. The beauty of the Hamsa Hand is a trend I see working for a very long time. Furthermore, at pocket money prices, the statement necklaces also available at Almost Grown will be sure to turn heads and get compliments! Emily hopes to expand the online store and make more products available, there has even been talk of an illustration twist! Make sure you keep updated through her website HERE

Prints and cut outs for AW13

Image

Just thought I would share with you all a couple of new purchases I made for AW13! I have been itching to get my hands on some printed trousers this season and these are definitely a winning buy! From H&M for only £14.99 I couldn’t go wrong. They remind me slightly of Dalmatian dogs… but hey, who said that isn’t cute!? The fit is perfect on me, which is usually a nightmare to find! They are supposed to be ‘ankle length’ but because my pins are far from lengthy, I chose these knowing they would be more of a full length! The detail of a gold zip around the back of the ankles allows for a tight fitting ‘skinny’ style. No more two sets of hands yanking to get them over the feet at the end of the day… This design is a saviour!!

The cut outs boots are from New Look (would you believe) and are priced at £24.99. Not bad for a pair so gorgeous. I love the buckle detail and the height of the heel. I must say this ‘chunky’ design also gives a little more comfort than a stiletto! I can’t wait to team these with a pair of frilly socks or some glittery tights.

Let me know what you think of my new purchases and what you will be buying this AW13!

P.s. Excuse the atrociously dirty mirror and blame my sister for that one haha

A Dash of Colour

Image

A Dash of Colour

Here’s a little high street combo I put together when searching for outfits online. I can’t wait to be back in Newcastle and to get dolled up for nights out, so here’s an idea of what I may purchase!

Let me know your thoughts on the shoes, I love the yellow and thought the dash of colour could really make the all black jumpsuit pop. The cut out wedge heel has been selling like hotcakes in Topshop for a while now and many other high street stores have now copied. I think the height makes legs look a million dollars and are perfect for a night out where you don’t want to look to dressy. They are also surprisingly comfortable, no painful pin heels!

The chunky detailed necklace gives a bit of glamour for the evening occasion and a belt cinches in the waist to give a feminine twist around the baggy hemlines. The gold detail on the belt ties in with the necklace to finish it all off…

Daytime denim

Thought I would post this little outfit I put together for day wear. Nothing fancy about it but I think it goes together really well…

The ‘skater’ style skirt filled shops along the high street this summer and I never managed to purchase one myself! However, after my sister got bored of hers she let me wear it and I managed to combine it with a few of my own items. The deep denim blue meant that I could team it with just about anything I wanted… An old topshop purchase teamed well with the skirt – I found that the orange complemented the blue and also added a summer vibe. A girl working in the bank complimented the fact I was wearing it, claiming that she had the same top but couldn’t figure what to wear it with!

Image

The necklace added detail to the outfit as both the top and skirt were so plain. I love the leopard print, and although a more wintery pattern, I liked the look of it against the orange. The bracelets were given to me on work experience at Anne Furbank and are from a brand called Sence. The idea of Sence jewellery is to layer it and when they gave me two of the bracelets, I was able to do just that! The nail polish in a deep red is again, rather wintery, however it works particularly well with the gold and that is what I liked about it.

Image

Finally I couldn’t be bothered with my hair that day so I tied it all back into a pony tail, but using a trick my friend (a hairdresser) taught me, I hid the hideous band with a piece of my own hair. Here I took a strand from under the ponytail wrapped it round a few times and pinned it underneath. I think it neatens off the look…

Getting Dressy

Getting Dressy

Yesss I am going to share my love of Misguided just a little bit more….

What I love most about this dress is firstly the white. A great colour for making you look like you’ve got a bit of a golden glow, and it goes with any pair or shoes ever! On top of that there is no real need for jewellery, the sequinned neck detailing substitutes for this perfectly without looking christmassy or OTT! It’s a real win win situation with this outfit choice.

This dress has been a staple in my wardrobe since last year now, I have probably worn it too many times!

Krafty Kitten

Arriving home for summer after my first year of Shakespeare and Jane Eyre, I noticed that my room wasn’t the same any more… After taking down all my photos and memories and shipping them off to my room in Newcastle, it really did look bare!

What a perfect opportunity to get my paws into some crafty creations and put them up in my room! I cannot describe the amount I miss doing Art, design and textiles – for my birthday some friends ended up giving me art kits to shut me up and stop me moaning about it (yes. it has come to this extent.)

I wanted to post some photos of my creations and step by step methods in case you would like to join the band wagon and get creative too… Summer is here after all, and lets not lie we will have more spare time that usual!

My room has a sort of shabby chic – come – Cath Kidston – come – the girliest person in the entire world vibe… so if that’s not your thing, feel free to make these but with a twist of your own style. Art is all about expressing yourself… that’s very important.

Anyway, less of the serious more of the making:

1) Hanging Happiness

I featured a sneak peak photo of this in a photo previously on my blog… but here’s the real deal. A hanging heart photo holder, covered in happiness, literally.

These frames are so easy to pick up… online, in Dunelm, John Lewis, anywhere selling home decor basically – in my eyes they’re an essential. I got mine from a market stall in Milton Keynes shopping centre for £12. I’m sure the shapes extend beyond hearts as well so go wild and pick something that fits your ‘vibe’.

I started by finding lots of photos on places like Tumblr that I felt would bring happiness to my room. As you can see… I like summer…. and the beach. Infact I’m sat at home right now wishing I had sand between my toes and a cocktail in my hand! I looked for things that had quotes on about happiness – because to me that’s the most important thing in life. I also have some of flowers because I am quite frankly OBSESSED with flowers and floral patterned everything, its probably unhealthy. Your photo choice could be of you with your family or friends, or things that fits the style of your room… basically it can be ANYTHING, its all about what you love as a person and what is going to make you smile when you look at it when you wake up on a dull Monday morning (although right now England isn’t so dull with 30 degree heat!).

– Once the decision making was done… I hole punched each photo with a single hole and purchased three different ribbons that matched the colours in my room. I particularly love the twisted robe. Threading each photo onto a ribbon I then simply tied them to the hooks on the frame.

I loved this idea as it is a bit more out of the box, who would hang photos on ribbons when you could just slide them into the hooks? Well me. And the ribbons really add a beautiful touch. Maybe you could too…

Image

2) Jar Tea light

This I saw on Pinterest and HAD to have a go myself, although the original idea was not my own…. the point was that I could make the light my own. I covered it in things I love…

-The jar I bought from a craft store which is why it has engraving on it, however, my mum tried this out after I showed her using just a recycled jam jar from the cupboard and it looked amazing! So get collecting jars and don’t throw them away – they make beautiful candle holders!

– I tied ribbon in a bow around the top, I use ribbon on everything… I think its probably coming close the the floral obsession.

– Then stuck hearts around the bottom. These my boyfriends mum got me from a store, they came in a craft pack with lots of colours. I know they sell these sorts of things in lots of places that do any form of card making so have a look round and get yourself something similar! Or anything that sticks and looks good!

The hanging beads I got from old bits of jewellery that I no longer wanted, threaded them to a piece of string and it looks really pretty.

– Finally I got some colour paper and cut hearts out of it, rolling it into a cylinder I put in the jar and let it open out to the wall of the glass… When the candle is light, the light shines through the hearts which is beautiful AND extra hearts made it extra pretty.

So get creative! If you wish… you could even punch holes in the lid and slide string through them; that way you can hang them from the trees outside for a summer evening!

3) Pretty Pin-board

Sick of looking at an ugly cork board?

– I purchased a cheap painting canvas from the pound store (would you believe it) and spent the money instead on some lovely fabric from Dunelm Mill at around £6 per metre. Obviously I didn’t need a metre! So it really is cheap to make and looks like you’ve spend some money buying it in a shop.

– I the cut the fabric just larger than the canvas itself, so that it could fold underneath the sides. Once I had folded it under I simply took three drawing pins for each side and pinned the fabric on tight at the back (into the wooden section of the canvas frame). This was so easy to do and once hung up on the wall it looks very professional!

I found photos and messages that were memories and created a little memory pin-board, the canvas works just aswell as cork did and looks so much better covered in fabric. I can’t wait to fill it up!….

I hope you liked my krafty kitten kreations and that you think about trying it out yourself. After all if you’re going to be spending time in your room this summer then why not make it a nice place to be in.

My next crafty post with be about how to make your own Cath Kidston style bunting (you may have noticed mine sneakily in the first photo of this post). So keep reading….

New Designers 2013!

Yesterday I caught the train to London and headed to an exhibition I had been meaning to for a few years! NEW DESIGNERS 2013 was about to blow my mind…

A visitor to my textiles class in year 12 had taken an interest in my work and one day arrived in class with a leaflet telling me I’d “love to visit”. It’s been on my mind ever since but I have never had the chance to go. I regret that now as I can assure you I having been missing out the past couple of years! It is amazinggggg! New Designers is an exhibition of mostly graduate work, split into two weeks, one fashion related and the other interior related. Obviously I opted for the fashion one and along with my mum I turned up with no idea what was in store that day….

Entering the business design centre we displayed our tickets and were welcomed in to the showroom. Wow. It was huge. The place made me buzz from head to toe! There was such a beautiful & artistic atmosphere as you walked through the displays. Some of the set ups were stunning and the work even more so. I didn’t know where to look, the quality of every individual piece was of the highest standard. You could practically feel the work and effort that these artists had put into there work. I wanted to take photos of everything in my path but had to be careful as some people were not willing to have photos taken of their work (which is very understandable). However, I did manage to gather a few great shots together by asking the artists, I will add these to my post so you too can get a feel of the exhibition (but seriously, you need to visit and see the real deal.)

Image

The most striking element of New Designers was the variety, nothing was gone amiss. The categories; clothing, headwear, neckwear, jewellery, kidswear, ceramics, wall hangings, fabrics, wallpapers, bags, costume, fashion interior and much more. Not only this but the variety of style was immense. Urban, futuristic, elegant, classic, flora, geometric, vintage, aztec and so on…
There was something for everyone, and as the day went on I realised I was often drawn to anything urban and futuristic and vibrant or alternatively, anything very floral and pretty. Quite the opposites but I often seem to switch between very feminine dresses and vibrant chunky jewellery within my own style! My mum adopted her own taste often drawn to the stunning kids-wear dresses and pretty bags and purses.
I loved this urban style street-wear that artist ‘Gurpreet Bains’ did, I can see his stuff selling very soon! Especially the bags:

Many artists had cards with images of their work and contact details on, although I won’t be hiring (I think I would hire them all!), I will definitely be keeping these for future inspiration!

Image

The further I went round the exhibition the more I seemed to notice the idea of an artistic community coming together. There were competitions such as decorating an image of an Absolut Vodka bottle (I will upload mine later for you all to see). There were also massive bits of paper and even whiteboards where people could doodle things that had inspired them from the show, or simply write messages to the ND13 ‘community’.

doodle notebook

One thing that caught my eye most was the other Absolut Vodka competition between the artists. Four of them had the chance to decorated a real glass bottle (a huge one at that, I have no idea who would drink a bottle that size haha!). Here is my favourite, I love the idea of stitching the letters on and the beautiful sheet music, very chic:

Image

Another girl called Lucy had made her design interactive, getting visitors to the exhibition help her colour the bottle in which was covered with a ‘community’ inspired design. I thought this was amazing, and such a clever idea to bringing artists together. The winner was a girl called Lara Waghorn who managed to pop blue ink bubbles onto her bottle and it created a beautiful effect! (an idea I shall most definitely be taking up in the near future).

Some of the artists were interested in chatting to you about their work and one girl told me she had already had lots of interest from employers and most importantly from high street store OASIS! Opportunities were looking fantastic for her! After only graduating a week ago and being selected as 1 of 20 from her university to go to ND13, she is definitely heading in the right direction. She seemed so lovely and gave me some advice on the fashion industry which will now stay with me forever. I hope to see her designs on a dress in the near future (I will be heading straight to Oasis to purchase!).

Nicole Bradley was my favourite artist of the day with the most beautiful prints on fabric, I did not get the chance to meet her but I am praying that her work comes into stores one day! The detail and effort in this print needs to be appreciated by all…

At only £10 New Designers is the best talent I have ever seen under one roof. The variety ensured me that next year will be filled with even newer ideas and totally different. I can’t wait to go again & if you are interested in fashion or interior then I advise you hop on the train to London too..

The little white dress…

Recently I bagged myself 2 weeks of summer work experience at designer stockist Anne Furbank, the shop I have loved since I was tiny! I have never forgotten the beautiful window displays along with the beautiful staff, so it wasn’t a surprise when my legs went to jelly realising I’d have to make an appearance in the shop. With a wardrobe full of primark dresses I was going to have to make an effort to fit in. I am hoping that this will convince you that looking super chic does not cost so much! Stingy but it worked when I got a “what you are wearing is perfect for the store” on leaving the place…

I thought I would share with you some photos of what I opted for, all on a student budget.

The dress – Primark £13
The lipstick – 17 at Boots (Hot Flash) £4.99
The heels – £10 Peacocks
The anklet – £5 Accessorize
Bangle and earrings – from a market abroad

Chunky Monkey

I’m LOVING the recent(ish) outburst of statement jewellery, it’s got to the point where I literally feel bare walking out the house without a big chunky bit of gold swinging from my neck! Chains, beads, neon, spikes, rope and animal heads… you name it, I want it! And there seems to be no going back because AW13 is continuing the trend with lots more bold metal to come. A nice chunky necklace makes any plain outfit look a million dollars, it also adds a bit of quirk and edge so finding the right shape and colour to fit your style is a great way to express yourself. Be it hipster geometrics, warrior shards, grunge spikes or neon brights… you’ll find a special piece somewhere. Here are a few of my favourites, available at Topshop, Miss Selfridge, Bershka and Dorothy Perkins:
